Research shows that only 8 percent of people achieve their New Gear’s goals!
Here are some tips to help you avoid falling into the 92 percentile that don’t. The fact that you are intentionally setting goals is enough to show that you have the desire to achieve them. However, in order to achieve your goals it takes a bit more than just setting them, it requires skill. Not to worry these skills can be learnt and developed, all it requires is your commitment.
This year I’ve spent time researching the practices of the most successful entrepreneurs and how they are able to consistently achieve their goals. This confirmed my own thoughts and experience in goal setting, and I am thrilled to be able to share it with you. The first step is to set meaningful goals – The goals must be be your own rather than what you think someone else would like for you to achieve. When you are setting a goal that resonates with you, you are more likely to have the motivation to achieve it.
Secondly – Set specific goals, as vague goals are rarely achievable. Having specific goals holds you accountable to them. For example, a general goal may be I want to lose weight. A specific goal would be on Tuesday and Thursday I will run 6 km.
Thirdly, is it achievable? If you are setting your goals too high you are setting yourself up for failure before even starting. Rather start off small and periodically reassess your goals and build on them, this will boost your confidence and increase one’s sense of self-efficacy.
Fourth, know what you are prepared to sacrifice in order to achieve your goals – This is being realistic. In order to achieve your goals you need to be willing to put in the hard yards which may be giving up the things you enjoy the most. Knowing what you are prepared to give up on will reduce the risk of any unforeseen surprises.
Fifth, set yourself affirmations and reminders why you are achieving your goals – Visualise how you would behave/think/feel once you have achieved your goals. Developing a connection to your goals help you stay focused and in flow. Be compassionate towards yourself – you may fall off the bandwagon periodically but it isn’t the end of the world. I truly believe failure is the key ingredient in authentically reaching your goals. Failure is what will lead to success if you are able to respond and correct course.
