6 tips to calm your nerves before an important interview
Interviews are important, we all know this – your whole career could hinge on how well you do. The problem is the more you think about the interview and all the ‘what ifs’, the more you make yourself a nervous wreck before you’ve even started! So how do you put your best foot forward when you feel too nervous to even tie your shoelaces? Here are 5 simple tips to help you calm your nerves before an important interview:
1. Do your homework:
Research the yacht or company you’re interviewing with. In finding out more about them you can gauge if it is a workplace that inspires you and shares similar values to you. Write down questions if there is any information that is unclear to you that you would like to seek clarification on. Most interviewers will give you an opportunity to ask these questions. Being prepared shows that you are serious about your career and this is an even greater incentive for them to hire you.
2. Prepare your interview appearance:
Select an outfit that is simple corporate wear. For ideas on what is most suitable have a look at my pinboards on interview clothes. Check your clothing the day before to make sure it is clean and ironed. Hang it up somewhere where it can’t get crushed or spoiled. Polish your shoes, clean and cut your nails and allocate enough time on the day of the interview to shower, wash and dry your hair. Simple yet stylish is the look you are after. You want to look professional but not impersonal. Make sure your hair is groomed and if you’re wearing jewellry keep it understated. When you look good, you’ll feel more confident going into the interview.
3. Map your route, ride and day:
Know where you are going for the interview and how to get there. If you are using public transport make sure you check the schedule. Take the route the day before so that you know which stop to get off at or where to park. Plan to arrive at least 30 minutes before the interview. That way if there are delays, you won’t be rushed and arrive late.
4. Practice interview questions:
List the job requirements and then next to each write down how your skill set meets the criteria. This will help you define how your experience is relevant to the job you’re applying for. Familiarise yourself answers to the questions you think they might ask when you know what to say you will come across more confident.
5. How to manage your nerves
Write down any recurring thoughts that you may be having. Journaling has proven to be effective in managing negative or unwanted thoughts. This action can reduce your anxiety generally, beyond just at job interviews.
6. Try out a relaxation technique
Take some relaxation time before your interview. Sometimes the best way to prepare is to take a break and relax. Relaxation can be achieved through meditation, exercise, reading, listening to music, being out in nature, or really anything that takes your mind off of your worries. Try different forms of relaxation to find what works best for you. Breathing exercises are also highly beneficial. When you’re anxious, your breathing becomes shallow. Try breathing in for a count of 4, hold for 2, and breathe out for a count of 4. Do this for a minute or two.
